Funky Dresses
When you hear the word ‘funky’ many things can come to mind and one of those
things is off beat, strange and different. The term funky dresses immediately takes you back to the ‘flower
child’ days, Wood Stock, bell bottom pants, mini dresses, wild colours and even wilder designs.
The different types of funky dresses
Maybe you are too young to remember all those things so to give you an idea of
this type of dress, think of a bright green mini dress with yellow sunflowers on it, or the flowered mini dress
with a scooped neckline and what looked like bell bottom sleeves complete with white go-go platform boots. The
material that this dress is made from looks something like a grandmotherly type would make her dress out
of!
Another type of funky dresses are the ones that are make of
psychedelic materials of yellows, reds, pinks and oranges all in one dress, or maybe the dress was made of shades
of black, green, white and pink with straight sleeves until they reached the wrist and they had a big
flair.
More funky dresses
Not all of these were mini dresses. They were also prom dresses, wedding dresses
and more. Most of what is considered funky comes from the 1970’s because everything at that time was funky and
cool. It was the time of the brightest colours and the louder the better! You had A-line dresses, dresses with
flaring sleeves, v-necks, scoop necks and much more.
Some of the dresses were called ‘Tunic Dresses’ which had a like a belt that was
attached to the waistline and tied in the back with little pleats on the bodice. This type of dress was usually
worn over pants, leggings or jeans.
Another type of funky dresses available was the jumper, which was a dress
under which which you wore a blouse or some type of shirt. These jumpers could be any colour, plain or with some
type of design. They were worn with knee socks and saddle oxford shoes and were popular to wear to
school.
